Very Busy Weekend

Only time for a quick note today, since the weekend was so dammed busy.

Saturday morning, we got an early start, and went to see a glass supplier, hoping to see some railing systems.  We came up more or less empty.  Then it was off to a flooring place to look for more laminate samples for the basement.  After that, the imperative was to head back to the house and start assembling the Ikea cabinets for the laundry room.  The light isn't so good in that room, and the electrical outlets are out of commission, so it was extension cords and worklights to the rescue.  We managed to get most of the cabinets assembled, including all the ones that are necessary in order to install the laundry sink and reconnect the washer/dryer.  We're hoping to have the laundry going this week, and also we'd be able to wash dishes in the laundry sink instead of using plastic buckets filled from the shower.

This evening, we finally got a primitive kitchen and eating area set up in the living room, and ate the first sit-down meal since we'd moved back to the house.  The kitchen setup is much less elaborate, since we'll be doing almost 100% heat-up food from down the street, and  little actual cooking this time.  I'm not setting up Miss Nancy again either...I have a small "Aeropress" coffee brewer, that'll get us through until we can have a real coffee maker again.

Also today, the plastic bubble downstairs was taken down, and Jane and I are moving our stuff up from the basement into our old bedroom.  We're moving from the sofa bed to an inflatable mattress.  The basement is not empty yet, but the sleeping quarters will be upstairs starting tonight.  The room is empty of construction debris, but is also more or less devoid of electrical power.  Extension cords to the rescue once again.

The island got its first coat of polyurethane on Friday.  It'll likely take a couple more coats before the finish is complete.

Here, you can also see the four steel drawers, though the stainless is still covered by a plastic film.

Handles have been installed on the lower cabs.  The small dark square above the middle row of handles in our soapstone sample.  The soapstone counters should look very nice over top of the walnut.
